How to stop plucking?

Assalamu Alaykum,

Many dear sisters in Islam have the correct intention when it comes to wanting to stop plucking their eyebrows, but may not know how to go about it. I have a few tips that may help my sisters by the will of Allah.

1- Fear Allah. Understand my sister in Islam that plucking your eyebrows is not a light matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in an authentic hadith, that the one who plucks her eyebrows is cursed.

‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated that he heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) curse the women who pluck their eyebrows and file their teeth for the purpose of beautification, who change the creation of Allaah. [Narrated by al-Bukhaari (4507)]

Who amongst us wants to be deprived of Allah’s mercy? That’s what being cursed is..

2- Look forward to the reward of repenting and abstaining from sin. Allah says in the Noble Quraan:

“O you who believe! Turn to Allaah with sincere repentance! It may be that your Lord will expiate from you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise)” [al-Tahreem 66:8]

3- Ask Allah for guidance. I remember when I wanted to quit plucking my eyebrows I would ask Allah to make me love the shape of my natural brows and not want to pluck them. Praise be to Allah, now I do not want to have my brows any other way!

4- Be realistic. Understand that your eyebrows will not go back to their full shape until after one or two months by the will of Allah. During this time, the eyebrows may seem messy. Be patient as this is the hardest part and it will pass insha Allah. By the will of Allah your eyebrows will look nice and even when they have all grown out.

5- Do not be influenced by others. What you see on TV/magazines etc usually influences the way you think. If you spend too much time looking at ‘celebrities’ soon the shaytaan may start whisper to you and you may become dissatisfied with your appearance. This is another important reason to abstain from wasting time on TV and magazines.

6- If you feel an urge to pluck,  ignore this as it is a whisper from shaytaan. Keep yourself busy with good deeds and pray to Allah to keep you strong. Rather than plucking, take care of your body in halal ways, for eg treat you hair to keep it strong, give your self a facial to stay radiant etc.

May Allah keep us strong and help us abstain from what displeases Him. Please keep me in your sincere dua’s.

  1. wow i didn’t know it was haram to file your teeth but alhamdulillah i rejected the dentists advice to file them lol. “Apparently my teeth were uneven”

  2. Sister Muslimah,

Please refer to the following fatwa:

    Ruling on straightening the teeth
What is the ruling on straightening the teeth, if the lower jaw is small and the teeth are overcrowded or crooked, and the teeth of the upper jaw are protruding, noting that the straightening process requires the extraction of some teeth to make more room, and that after the straightening is complete the teeth will need to be filed to remove traces of the sustance used to keep the metal in place?

    Praise be to Allaah.

Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan was asked about straightening the teeth and he said, If that is necessary, such as if there is some deformity in the teeth that needs to be corrected, then there is nothing wrong with it. But if it is not necessary then it is not permitted., rather it is forbidden to file the teeth or make gaps between them for the purpose of beautification, and there is a strong warning against doing so because it is a kind of messing about and altering the creation of Allaah.

But if this is done for the purpose of medical treatment, or to remove a deformity or for some other need, such as when a person is unable to eat unless his teeth are corrected, then there is nothing wrong with that.

With regard to removing extra teeth, Shaykh Ibn Jibreen said: there is nothing wrong with removing an extra tooth, because it deforms the appearance and makes things difficult for a person… but it is not permissible to file them or make gaps between them because of the prohibition on doing so.

  3. Dear sister in islam,
everything you say here is correct and i know its haram to pluck eye brows but i started when i was really young. i stoped alhamdulilah because i realized how bad it was but they grew back really coarse and wild and even in places they didnt grow before. i tryed bleaching but it didnt work…. now im so horrified by my brows. i read on islamonline. net that if you are just cleaning around the brows not shaping that it would be ok for the sake of keeping tidy. do you think this is correct , do you know where i can get a second opinion? thank you for your help
